SNMP ping mib extension is a lightweight add-on that enables SNMP-managed devices to run ICMP echo (ping) tests on demand and expose the results through standard MIB objects. It lets your network management system trigger pings from remote vantage points—without SSH scripts or custom tooling—to verify reachability, measure packet loss, and track round-trip time.

Key capabilities:

  • Initiate ping operations via SNMP set requests; monitor progress and retrieve results via get/walk
  • Report per-target metrics: success/failure, packets sent/received, loss percentage, and min/avg/max RTT
  • Configure parameters such as destination, probe count, interval, payload size, and timeout
  • Run multiple concurrent probes with unique handles; support for asynchronous or scheduled tests
  • Optional rolling history tables for recent results
  • Designed to work with standard ping-related MIBs (e.g., DISMAN-PING-MIB) and common NMS/MIB browsers
  • Integrates with extensible SNMP agents (e.g., via AgentX or native plugins) with minimal resource overhead
  • Access control aligned with SNMPv3 best practices; restrict write access to start/stop tests

Typical uses:

  • Validate service reachability from branch sites or network devices
  • Triangulate latency issues by testing from multiple locations
  • Automate SLA checks and alert on loss or elevated RTT
  • Reduce manual CLI testing and streamline troubleshooting

Requirements:

  • Existing SNMP agent and manager infrastructure
  • Write access to start probes (SNMPv3 recommended for security)

Note: Specific features and MIB object support may vary by platform and agent implementation.
